"Tom gives the listeners and performers alike a real insight into where a piece comes from, how the ensemble fits together and how to listen in a more informed way. Projects like these make the often closed world of classical music more accessible, more stimulating and more enjoyable for everyone involved. As a player it is initially disconcerting to be so close to your audience but this proximity is ultimately what makes the performance so exciting."
Diana Statham, musician
"To hear Metamorphosen in this setting – and from such an intimate perspective – was both moving and magical. Your detailed analysis before the complete performance was a model of what the BBC should be doing so much more of! To hear all those musical examples played live so seamlessly interwoven into your lucid explanation made everything come alive – it made it all relevant and even more powerful. I’ve never heard such an approach better done..."
Dr Paul Edlin, Director of Music, Queen Mary University of London
"Fascinatingly placed in context and seamlessly executed. The narration was inspired, articulate and fluent. All in all, a breathtakingly uplifting performance."
Jonathan Del Mar, musicologist
Five Senses Music devises and presents musical experiences to enrich and broaden people’s lives.
We create settings in which audiences young and old, musicians professional and amateur, experts and newcomers can share in the energy of live classical music… and be inspired by one another.
The traditional classical concert-going experience is sometimes perceived to be stuffy and exclusive, or with an uncomfortable distance between artists and audience. Getting close enough to the action to explore it with all five senses allows for a different kind of contact: a truly physical engagement, and meaningful interaction.
It is this spirit of discovery and adventure that informs our work, through concerts, workshops and other participatory learning experiences.
